At a Glance
Just southwest of Denver, Roxborough State Park features nicely maintained trails, dramatic red rocks, and birds galore. Explore on your own or take advantage of the park’s educational events, listed on the Colorado State Parks website.
What to Love
A perennial favorite with Denver locals, Roxborough offers hikes for most ability levels with lots of “ooh and ah” scenery. It’s well-maintained and easy to find. Generous park hours allow for watching a dramatic sunset amidst towering red rocks, then driving a few short minutes to camping or hotels. You can bring a picnic to eat outside the visitors’ center (note, no shade or grills), but there is no other day use area. You’ll find a few words about ADA access here.
Where to Sleep
Not here – the park closes at 8:00 p.m. and does not allow camping. Happily, there are 197 spots to choose from at nearby Chatfield State Park. The Denver suburbs of Littleton and Highlands Ranch offer hotel lodging. Or drive US-85 South to CO-67 for campgrounds in the Pike National Forest (the closest is just 35 minutes away). If you’re in an RV and want a sure thing, head to Cabela’s in Lone Tree, about 30 minutes away.
Good to Know
This is a hiking park for foot traffic only: no bikes, no dogs, no drones. Not so great for RVs, either: there are no pullouts or day use areas on the single road (marked in gray on the north end of the map).
Carry $5 and $1 bills for the self-serve entrance fee kiosk, in case there’s no attendant on duty.
Expect limited parking and strict enforcement. At peak times, vehicles may be asked to wait in line for another visitor to leave the park.
If Google’s GPS leads you past the state park turnoff into a housing development called Roxborough Park, their gate attendant will kindly redirect you.
You’ll find some grocery stores and services on Rampart Range Road near the park.
